.APPEARANCE.

Riku is one of those rare people who are excruciatingly beautiful without even realizing it. As if to demonstrate this fact, he wears a lot of unstylish clothes which would include but are not limited to baggy blue jeans with a pyramid belt, a white, yellow and black vest over another black tank top that reveals his belly button, and a white armband, all of the above covering up a tall, lightly muscled frame. Most of the time, Riku wears the black cloak of Organization XIII in order to hide his true identity.

Meanwhile, his face is delicate and feminine in both shape and appearance—yet one of Riku’s most notable traits would have to be his hair. It reaches past his wide shoulders in silky waves of silver-blue. Along with this is a black blindfold over bright aquamarine eyes that have developed extremely constricted pupils because of his eyesight, or lack thereof.

.THE HEART.

The darkness has completely turned this young man’s soul inside-out. He feels that without his best friends, he has nothing worth living for. And it just so happens that Riku has neither. Therefore he acts recklessly with the life he has, wandering the darkness and lacking any emotion but anger and sorrow. His smile and laughter are a rare sight to behold, his words devoid of joy unless they are about his friends—and even then, they are bittersweet.

Yet at the same time, he appears to long for some kind of repentance for what he’s done. Riku claims that his blindness is not enough; he lives on only to find the lost hearts of Sora and Kairi, making him appear rather cold towards anyone else he meets along the way. But in truth, Riku fears letting anyone get close, wishing nobody else to be hurt by the darkness that runs in his veins. He believes that even after he gets his friends back, he cannot be fully forgiven for what he’s done

The part of Riku which shows only when he can open up to someone is a mischievous, charming persona, one that enjoys friendly competition and games. This is the one time he allows any hint of his old childish innocence to shine through.

.SWEET AND POISON.

Abilities/Strengths: He uses the powers of Darkness freely, knowing that they are a part of him that shall never disappear. Since Riku’s loss of eyesight, he can ‘see’ the intent of a person’s heart in their auras, and therefore knows whether someone is of darkness, light, or somewhere in between.

Weapons: Destined to be true Master of the Keyblade, Riku has become wielder of another, darker version called the Way to Dawn. It bears the colours of a Heartless—black and red with hints of dark blue, curved with a feathered blue wing at the end and a demon and angel wing serving as its guard.

Weaknesses: Without a doubt, Riku’s weakness is his friends. He knows that with them at his side he would be happy, yet at the same time, he “doesn’t deserve them,” as he puts it. In other words, if an enemy were to disguise themselves as one of his friends, Riku would most likely be the first to lose unless he allowed his usually dormant rage to take over. His second weakness, an alternate version of the first, is Light. He feels that no matter how hard he tries, he’ll never be able to get near what he longs so desperately for.

.THE DESCENT.

Riku wished to explore worlds much less mundane than his own ever since meeting Kairi as a child. At fifteen, he’d already spent many years with his best friends Sora and Kairi on Destiny Islands, dreaming of a time when they could be free. And so, during one fateful summer, the three of them decided to build a raft in hopes that they could follow this desire for a much bigger adventure.

However, the night before they were meant to leave, Riku ended up opening the door to the heart of Destiny Islands, allowing the Heartless’ entry, and, eventually, the destruction of their home world. Already seduced by darkness, he invited Sora to come with him, into that darkness. But when the pure-hearted boy refused, he became alternate wielder of the Keyblade, leaving Riku to be sucked into Hollow Bastion where he came to meet a cruel woman by the name of Maleficent.

Claiming that she would help him find his friends if he served her, Maleficent further poisoned Riku’s already darkening heart and deceived him into thinking Sora had betrayed their friendship. Later, Maleficent revealed that Kairi had been attacked by Heartless when Riku opened the door to darkness back on Destiny Islands. Since she’d been turned to nothing but an empty shell without a heart, the young man set out to find his best friend’s missing heart.

Turned almost completely to the dark side by now, Riku ventured through inter-dimensional corridors of darkness all the way back to Hollow Bastion in order to test the limits of his power, nearly losing his heart in the process. Maleficent then unlocked what she claimed was Riku’s ‘hidden power’ upon his arrival, granting the ability Dark Mode and increasing his natural talents so that he could fight battles yet to come.

Once Sora arrived in Hollow Bastion to rescue Kairi, Riku had already turned against him under Maleficent’s control when he found out that HE was the one meant to be ‘Master’ of the Keyblade. Therefore, he took the Keyblade from his ex-friend, calling him a delivery boy meant to bring the Keyblade to him. With that he left Sora with nothing but an old wooden sword the two used to practice with on Destiny Islands.

But because his heart was too tainted by darkness, the Keyblade later rejected him and returned to its true master. Riku then fought against Sora, Donald and Goofy, and was left beaten and destroyed by his own illusions. That is when the true villain behind it all, Xehanort’s Heartless, came to be known, possessing Riku’s body when he noticed his desire to become strong. When Maleficent, too, failed to defeat Sora and company, the possessed Riku betrayed her and unlocked the darkness in her heart and turned her into her dragon form. She fell once again by Sora’s hands.

In the castle’s grand hall where the Seven Princess’ slept, ‘Riku’ fought against Sora using an artificial Keyblade created from six of the Princesses’ of Heart, one which could unlock a person’s heart. It was in this final battle with Sora that Riku finally came to vanquish his best friend, causing both Sora and Kairi’s hearts to disappear. This time, the brunette was naught but the empty hull of a body as well, his last parting words being, “… We’ll wait for you, Riku.”

Overcome by the loss of his friends, Riku managed to regain himself long enough to weaken and control the piece of Xehanort’s Heartless within him and free his heart from the dark hold he’d had on Riku, with the help of his false Keyblade.

For over a year Riku’s heart wandered the darkness, searching for the hearts of the friends he’d lost. Though there was no light, he learned to recognize and distinguish the differences between each presence he sensed around him as he probed for the ones belonging to Sora and Kairi.

And then, at last, as he was drifting through the abyss, he came upon one heart which shone much brighter than any he’d ever witnessed before. It screamed of ‘Sora’. Riku drew closer and closer to it, relishing the warmth it emanated with until his mind closed gently around it. But before he could touch it further, he woke up in the familiar walls of Hollow Bastion instead, his body returned to him.

Yet the darkness remained, even when Riku opened his eyes.

The sixteen-year-old felt, rather than saw, someone appear in front of him as if through a void in space and time. The man introduced himself as Xemnas, leader of an organization who sought to find their missing hearts. He told Riku that he’d been looking for him.

“What does any of this have to do with me!” Riku snapped. He was sure he still had a heart inside him, regardless of what he’d been through.

“Everything… and nothing,” replied the man. “But the dark power you wield may serve a purpose.” Xemnas went on to explain that they were searching for their lost hearts, hoping to destroy Heartless so that they may reach their goal of creating Kingdom Hearts. The darkly eccentric man questioned whether Riku wanted to join them, to which he replied, “I guess so. Heh-- what I have can’t exactly count as a heart.”

And so, garbed in a black cloak and still with the appearance of Xehanort’s heartless—or Ansem, as he called himself, Riku took the place of number thirteen in the Organization by default. He went on missions, fought battles, and taught himself how to fight without the use of his eyes along the way. Riku never allowed himself to get close to any of the other members and seemed to care only about finding Sora and Kairi’s lost hearts, killing thousands of Heartless in order to reach that goal.

Finally, the day came when their plans were to be thwarted by a strange mouse called King Mickey and his partners, the wizard Donald Duck and Goofy, the knight. With them was the real Ansem the Wise. Riku witnessed them come into the World That Never Was, startled by the amount of light which emanated from the three, especially the one who wielded the Kingdom Key. Though, it seemed each one of them was beaten and weary from their many ventures.

With a strange piece of machinery, they seemed to be planning to destroy the Kingdom Hearts that Xemnas and all of the Organization had worked so hard to build. In the midst of this act, Saix, Xemnas’s second-hand man, commanded Riku to stop them. He was too late, however. The machine blew under the pressure and unpredictability of hearts, and Ansem the Wise disappeared along with it. Strangely, Riku’s appearance reverted back to the way it had been before.

But it came with a price. Kingdom Hearts had nearly been depleted. Now, Riku had no idea where he was to find his friend’s hearts.

On his way back to telling Saix the news of his failure, however, a pain split through Riku’s skull, and he was suddenly pulled into Econtra.
